General Information
Name: Princess Ciela of Uranus
Alias: Sailor Uranus
Gender: Female
Birthday: 25 January
Zodiac Sign: Aquarius
Age: 16
Birthplace: Miranda Castle
Physical Description: Ciela stands tall at 5'9" and weighs in at 150 lbs, with small breasts, narrow hips, and an athletic build. Her skin tone is light peach with golden undertones; when she's out in the sun she's easy to burn, but within a few days the burn turns to tan. She has surprisingly few scars for someone as active as she's always been (the most noteworthy ones being one on her left calf from falling out of a tree as a child; one on her right wrist from having tripped and fallen into a window, breaking it; and one just off-centre on her forehead from a recent accident in an antigrav transport), but she does have several tattoos: the quote "Become the Wind" written in blackwork, in the runic language of her people just under her collarbones, a small midnight blue infinity symbol at the nape of her neck, and realistic full-colour mourning lilies on her right upper leg. Her eyes are narrow and coloured brown, with well-arched brows. Her nose is short and straight, but a little wide at the nostrils. Her lips are full, with a defined shape and a pronounced cupid's bow. Despite her aversion to makeup she wears a bit of gloss or medicated balm on her lips nearly all the time to keep herself from biting them, which she tends to do (sometimes to the point of blood) if they're bare. Her ears are slightly small and set close to her head; the lobes are pierced once and she usually wears a simple pair of garnet studs. Her light brown hair is short but shaggy (around 6-8" at the longest points, depending on how lazy she's been at keeping it up). It's naturally a bit wavy and forms little flips at the back with little to no encouragement.
When she's not in her fuku or royal garb, Ciela is usually found in tank tops and capri pants, most often in darker shades like navy, maroon, eggplant, and forest. Her shoes are usually comfortable leather sandals with little or no heel. Even during winter she tends to wear the same sort of thing (just maybe something with sleeves for once), since she has a high cold tolerance, but if it happens to snow and she has to be out in it for an extended time. . . well, she doesn't want to get frostbite, so she'll don woolen sweaters and long corduroy pants along with a coat and fur-lined boots. No matter what else she's wearing, she always wears a narrow garnet ribbon around her neck in memory of her lover who was sent to the guillotine. She plans to continue wearing the tribute indefinitely "until [her lover's death] no longer hurts."
As much as she dislikes wearing dresses, her favourite "princess gown" actually consists of a gold satin top with a sweetheart neckline and princess seams, with twin sets of straps being overlayed in gold (metal) chains studded with medium-sized garnets. Her lower half is covered in navy blue palazzo pants with a swirling gold print at the bottom of the legs; the flowing pants can almost look like a skirt if she's standing still and you squint. Her feet are clad in garnet-hued leather dress loafers with only a slight heel (still low enough to run in comfortably, if she has to). She wears her thin garnet ribbon tied around her neck as a choker and a gold (metal) armband on her upper right arm with a fairly large garnet stone set at the middle. She tends not to wear a tiara in this form, instead showing off a softly glowing golden Uranus sign emblazoned on her forehead. (like those pics of the princesses from the manga artbooks, where they show their symbols on their foreheads) The symbol is not there all the time, but can be willed to show up, or may show up spontaneously in times of stress or trouble.
Personality: Ciela’s personality can pretty much be split into how she was before her lover’s death and how she is now. In the past, she was very extroverted, vivacious, and silver-tongued; she always had something witty to say or an interesting story to tell. Now she’s much quieter and more brooding, sometimes saying morbid or fatalistic things that worry her family and friends. Speaking of which, she used to love being around and enjoying activities with her family and friends, but now she keeps her emotional distance from everyone, lest she lose someone else she cares about. Does she even still care about her parents, or does she blame them for her lover’s death? She hasn’t been talking to them lately at all aside from unenthusiastic greetings given in passing. She speaks much more frankly than she used to, when she does speak, as if she’s lost her filter or no longer cares what people think of her. She doesn’t feel the need to explain or justify herself anymore, or to apologise if she hurts someone’s feelings. It follows, then, that her parents have stopped letting her give any speeches or other forms of public address. Honestly, part of the reason she seems to have lost her filter lately is deliberate, done to spite her parents, but on another level it's also that she's come to realise life is short and precious, and none of us really knows what, if anything, comes after. Life is too short to be disingenuous.
Ciela used to be very even-keeled, but since the death of her lover, she’s become prone to mood swings, mostly swinging from better to worse, as though she catches herself being happy, feels like she shouldn’t be, and quickly changes to a more melancholic state. She’s also become much quicker to anger than she once was, leaving her family to apologise for her whenever she gets out of hand. Her family and friends walk on eggshells around her now to avoid making her angry or upset. One might think that, in her depression, she would be less likely to carry things through to completion, but somehow she seems to have become more motivated to finish projects than she once was. Perhaps she’s come to realise that the end could come to any of us at any time, and you can’t take it for granted that you’ll have time to do it later. She’s also become very impulsive, doing (sometimes very dangerous) things on a whim (and scaring the hell out of her family). Her parents worry this may be her way of attempting to kill herself, which may be partly true. She does have fantasies sometimes of dying and going to be with Kai in whatever place dead people end up. So far she's been too afraid to make any serious suicide attempts.
Her self-esteem has been eroded; she used to enjoy seeing herself as a prize to be won, but it’s all fun and games until someone you love is killed, isn’t it? She no longer sees herself as superior to anyone, and certainly not as any sort of prize. She used to love to run, but now can’t stand to do it anymore, understandably. She spends a lot of time contemplating existence and what, if anything, comes after. She wonders, if something does come after life, whether someone like her should be allowed to enjoy it.
One of the rare things about her that hasn’t changed is that she is still a creative person who enjoys writing poetry and song lyrics, they’re just a lot darker and more melancholy now than they used to be, and she’s a lot less likely to show them to people. She also still lifts weights, even more now than she used to; the place where her mind goes while she is lifting is about the closest thing she ever gets to meditation.
It's doubtful whether she will ever completely return to the way she was before. The damage has been done and the scars will remain indefinitely. But maybe as she starts to meet new people and find new friends, or dare I say it, maybe even new love eventually, she will start to come around a bit. Kai wouldn't have wanted her to be miserable forever, after all. She just needs to realise that.
Any Unique Abilities/Skills: Ciela writes poetry and song lyrics, now usually of the depressing, Poe-ish variety. She is capable of playing a harpsichord-like instrument that she had lessons on as a child, but isn’t skilled enough at it to compose music to match her lyrics; she can only play to existing sheet music. She lifts weights, so her body is solid, even though she doesn’t lift enough to look like one of those professional body builders. She is good at street fighting-style self-defence and, against tradition, she had her brothers teach her to use a sword.
History: Ciela was born to King Nalani and Queen Araceli in Miranda Castle on the moon Miranda of the planet Uranus, the first born of three children (the others are boys named Anani and Kamalani), next in line for the throne, and this generation’s Sailor Uranus. The typical Uranian child, she grew up loving to race on foot, by bike, and as soon as she was old enough, in antigrav transports and space ships. Indeed, the young princess seemed to enjoy every sport and most every other form of competition she tried, even down to very unprincesslike behaviour such as playing drinking games underaged (which she and her brothers were caught doing more than once by guards or servants and tried to bribe said adults into keeping quiet; it actually worked most of the time, and when it didn’t, those servants were let go). Growing up with brothers, she was always climbing trees, wrestling around, playing hero games and war rather than princess games and house, collecting bugs, and other boyish pursuits, and no-one really batted an eye. However, that didn’t stop her tutors from teaching her social skills and how to be a proper lady; Ciela excelled at those things as well. She was probably one of the most well-rounded princesses in Uranian history, in that regard.
When she came of age, her parents began to arrange the traditional competition meant to decide whom the princess would marry. Rather than being relegated to royalty alone, anyone with the balls enough to try could enter. Interested parties trained for months or even years beforehand in hopes of winning the footrace. The winner would earn the princess’ hand in marriage, while the losers would face execution. It was a brutal tradition, yes, but one intended originally to ensure only the bravest, most serious and dedicated suitors would even try for the princess' hand. (The fact the citizens enjoyed it as entertainment was only a perk.)
Unbeknownst to her parents, Ciela had already taken a lover, a commoner called Kai who worked as a tattoo artist. They had talked while Kai did the writing on her chest, and hit it off right away. They saw each other often afterwards, in secret. It had long been a point of pride for Ciela that there wasn’t a guard in the kingdom that could keep up with her, if she wanted to slip away (despite her parents’ constant attempts to locate just such a person). The infinity tattoo at the nape of her neck was done as a symbol of their love, just days before the competition that was meant to choose the princess’ mate. Kai, who had been training for the race ever since meeting her, felt sure of a win.
The race ended in a three-way tie, with the winner indistinguishable to the naked eye, but in Ciela’s eyes there was no doubt that Kai had done it. To increase the excitement of the competition, the final winner was not to be announced until after the clear losers had faced their execution. The spectators cheered as the body count rose, laughing and jeering at those cowardly enough to cry or beg for their lives. The contestants had known what they were getting into when they entered themselves in the race, after all. They should have been willing to face their ends with dignity. That was what Ciela had thought as well, as she eagerly awaited the final results of the race. It had come down to a laser-measured finish, but the winner was. . . (a smile spread across Ciela’s face and her chest puffed up with pride). . . after a careful review of the results. . . (the pause was beginning to make her nervous somehow, but no sense of dread had set in as of yet). . . by two hundredths of a second. . . Dorji of Titania?! Suddenly Ciela felt her chest tighten as the realisation set in that she was about to lose the one person outside her own family whom she had ever loved. . . the only person she had ever loved “that way”. . . and for what? Some random guy from Titania whom she had never even met? It was all she could do not to throw up. Kai met the executioner without fear, and when asked for last words, declared an undying love for the princess. Ciela wears a thin maroon ribbon around her neck ever since, in mourning for her lost love.
Faced with the reality of having to marry someone she doesn’t love or even know, she weighed her options. She could kill herself before the coming wedding. . . or kill her future groom, which would probably also mean her death. The feeling that she may do the latter increases the closer she gets to the date and the more she learns about Dorji. Having been encouraged to get to know her before the wedding, he's been spending nearly every free moment with her, and it's really grinding on her last nerve. Fast though he may be, that doesn’t make him any less of a conservative-minded jerk who seems to want nothing so much as to control her. Well, she always said there wasn’t a guard in the kingdom who could keep up with her. With any luck, the same thing could be said for her fiance (as much as hearing or having to use that word made her sick). Maybe she should run away?
Senshi Information
Senshi Name: Sailor Uranus
Senshi Fuku: A strapless black bodice forms the base of her fuku, with the sailor collar and full asymmetrical skirt (which reaches just to mid-calf at the back, and slightly above the knees at the front, with a bit of a ruffled edge and the look of a wraparound at the front (this is hard to describe!) in gold satin. The top of the black bodice, over the breasts, is reinforced with a deep midnight/navy blue fabric; the way it is ruched at the front helps give the illusion of slightly larger breasts. A large blue bow with long tails, in a matching fabric to the top bit, sits at the (slightly dropped) waistline at the back of her fuku. There is a large garnet star brooch which joins the collar to the top of the bodice at the front. Her circlet is made up of deep blue translucent glass beads with a star-shaped garnet jewel at the middle of her forehead. Rather than gloves, she wears garnet-coloured leather bracers, tooled with a swirling design similar to the border on her favourite princess outfit, covering her forearms. Her shoes are flat, practical garnet leather sandals meant for running around in. Her choker is the same narrow garnet ribbon she always wears; whether it will change when she no longer wears the choker in daily life or not is unknown.
Henshin: "Uranus power, make up!" She holds both hands out in front of her in a cupping position, with her henshin item nestled inside. From there she quickly motions her arms upwards to release the bird, which trails glowing blue ribbons behind it as it flies. She twirls a bit as the ribbons wrap around her torso, and the black bodice is the first to form. She stops revolving and the bird makes another appearance, flying quickly by her and leaving her golden skirt and collar in its wake. She raises one arm in a pose as though showing off a muscle, and a maroon bracer forms on that arm. She raises the other arm similarly and its bracer forms as well. The bird returns with its ribbons and she holds her arms out to each side to allow the bird to fly around her, creating the blue ruched top. It flies through a quick, swirly bow-tying movement to create the back bow. Her legs move as though she were jummping a hurdle in track and her simple maroon sandals appear on her feet. The lettering of the tattoo on her chest flashes from left to right with a golden light and she raises one hand to touch it as her jewellery appears in a similar linear flash. The bird is not finished yet, as it flies around her a couple of times without carrying ribbons before it flies directly into her chest, finally forming her garnet brooch. She finishes in a determined pose, with legs in a battle stance and hands poised as if to haul back and punch a guy.
Powers: *Razor Wind: While calling out the attack, she slashes at the air like a karate kid doing katas and a cold wind flies towards the target that can literally cut right into you like a blade. The range of the wind "blades" is 20 yds.
*Becoming the Wind: She doesn’t have to call out any words for this, but touches the tattoo on her chest, which glows golden and she literally turns into air. Like air, she is incorporeal in this form, and if standing still no-one/nothing can touch her. However, she can't impact anything in the environment unless she is moving. She very literally behaves like air/wind in this form. She can use this to move as fast as the wind, or can rush you with her wind-self, which can hit pretty hard. However, being in her air/wind form is hard to sustain due to the concentration required, so it would only last 3-5 turns before she would revert to her normal self.
Weapons or Magical Items: Her henshin item is a small, blue plush bird that Kai gave her. She does not have her talisman yet.
RP Sample: Ciela's parents hated her tattoos. They were so common, her parents thought, so unprincesslike. But then again, so many things about her were, weren't they? She supposed now her parents would have one more thing to hate about her, although that was assuming they ever saw it. Located on her thigh as this one would be, it was unlikely to be seen by anyone besides a lover (unless she wore a swimsuit, which was rare)-- appropriate because these mourning lilies were being done in memory of the only one she'd ever been in love with. Maybe Kai would see it from wherever it was people went when they died. The religion she'd grown up with taught that the executed would never make it to paradise, but that wouldn't apply to someone as kind and gentle as Kai, would it? She just couldn't believe that to be true. She wouldn't even want to go to paradise after she died if her love wouldn't be there.
The tattoo artist who wasn't Kai stopped working and checked on her, asking whether she was okay and if she needed a break. It was only then Ciela noticed her eyes were wet with tears. She wiped them with one bare hand, then with a handkerchief the artist provided. She tried to smile, though it came across looking sad instead.
"You think a little needle's gonna break me?" she scoffed. "I'm fine. I just. . . thought of something sad, that's all."
"The one these flowers are for," the tattoo artist guessed. Fortunately she didn't try to guess whom that might be, at least not aloud. "I'm sorry for your loss, your highness."
Ciela wiped her eyes once more and sniffled a bit. "Thank you."
"Is there anything I can do?" the woman asked helplessly.
"Just keep doing your job," the princess replied, "and make this the most beautiful tattoo you've ever done."
It was no less than Kai would have deserved.
