General Information
Name: Princess Nanshe of Neptune
Alias: Sailor Neptune
Gender: Female
Birthday: 22 February
Zodiac Sign: Pisces
Age: Sixteen
Birthplace: Triton, largest moon of Neptune
Physical Description:
Nanshe stands at a puny five foot even, and given her age she probably won’t exceed that height much further. Her physique veers on the thin side, though barely enough to notice. She has a modest sort of muscle tone, lending her cool tan skin a smooth and taut quality even in her thicker lower half. Her long, thin neck blends elegantly with narrow, sloped shoulders, though it makes her head look smaller as a result. Her bust is small but still present, while her waist is somewhat undefined. Comparatively wide hips curve into long, streamlined legs. She has small hands and feet with short digits and smooth nails.
Her face is thoroughly round, with a receding chin and low cheekbones, the latter of which form distinct ‘apples’ when she smiles. Plump lips are slightly rosier than her skin, with a defined philtrum breaking up their otherwise round outline. Small, narrow eyes are set widely apart, with large gunpowder grey irises crowding out her white sclerae. She has a fairly flat nose depth-wise with a gentle outward curve on the bridge, and little variation in its width from a front view. Her ears are small, round, and lay close to her head.
Nanshe’s silken, wavy hair is a soft medium mauve, and only two or three inches in length. She typically parts it to the side and fashions it into neat finger waves on the top and sides, with the back forming subtler curls. Typically her hair bears a slick sheen and a soft aroma, thanks to the fragrant oil she uses to style it.
Her royal princess ‘gown’ is a huge swath of delicate teal fabric with heavily embroidered mint green margins. The embroidery is done in various shades of blue and purple interwoven with tiny seashells. When wrapped around her body as intended, it looks like a long, flowing floor-length poncho with a large cowl neck and one of the embroidered margins crossing diagonally over her front like a sash. Slits in the fabric allow her to extend her arms, though she often hides them under the robe so the draping sides can billow loosely. Internal clips and ribbons keep the garment in place, and underneath it she wears a solid cadet blue bodysuit. With this she wears a matching circlet and choker necklace made of a crisscrossing black cord decked with plenty of colorful seashells, with a larger necklace of glass beads and fish scales hanging to her chest from under the folds of her cowl. Her teal shoes are embroidered much like the margins of her robe.
In casual garb, Nanshe dresses with practicality in mind like most of her people- though not without her own elegant touches. Bodysuits are common to her culture, and Nanshe is no exception. She usually pairs them with boots, shawls, or scarves just for her own personal flair. Garments akin to her gown are common too, though with sturdier fabric and fewer adornments. Less often, she dresses in loose tops and long skirts just to try something new. Since the weather stays the same year-round when living in underwater domes, Nanshe rarely adds or removes layers. She prefers wearing berry tones, with an emphasis on the cooler shades. Seashells and other marine life are common for accessories, such as fish scales arranged to look like flowers, or patches of preserved fish skin (without the smell, don’t worry) worn on the shoulders. Much like with her princess gown, she owns plenty of circlets and necklaces. Her ears are pierced once, and she favors wraparound earrings.
Her makeup usually focuses on enlarging her beady eyes, often with faint metallic shades. Her lips may be glossed with muted shades of red and pink, but she’s more commonly been known to color them aqua or blue- an eye-popping trend among her people. Frequent too for her society is to adhere small flat-bottomed jewels on her skin on the cheekbones and temples.
Personality:
Nanshe comes across as elegant and refined as a princess ought to be, but one can easily perceive her as cold and distant. When her fathers are carrying on their royal duties, she stands to the side and remains totally quiet, carefully observing with a placid, subtle smile. She almost never speaks for herself, instead allowing her parents or attendants to repeat her rehearsed lines in her place. This leaves a lot of commoners guessing as to her motives, and rarely endears others to her.
What are Nanshe’s motives, might one ask? They’re a mystery to almost everyone because she rarely expresses herself. She wishes she could be an effective diplomat, but she simply has no idea how to relate to people. With that attitude at the forefront of her mind, the idea of speaking to most strangers brings her to anxious silence. The strange part is, she has no problem being around crowds of people even by her lonesome, but talking to them is out of the question. Generally, she lets anxiety take control of her far too often. Try as she might, even through careful tutelage and preparation, she has yet to truly break this trend. She has a fiercely independent streak, making her somewhat resentful that she has to rely on her attendants so often publically.
On the other hand, her tendency to feel offended quickly and give people the silent treatment is another reason for her common silence. Seldom does Nanshe explain what or who hurts her feelings, but it happens more often than anyone else expects. She’s been known to remain in such a mood for days depending on the severity of the problem, though she usually gets over it if left by herself for a few hours. Such negative feelings are almost never shown on her face, but rather in her body language such as averted eye contact or tense movement. Even if she soon forgets why she was offended, she often feels suspicious of others and inadequate about herself.
Given her disconnect from the common folk, she has a somewhat narrow view of them. She relies mostly on stereotypes and judgmental observations without thinking much deeper on the matter, especially for those of different worlds. These preconceived notions are rather helpful to her (if insulting to everyone else) because her attention span could use some improvement. Nanshe often daydreams of the far-off places she’s seen and has yet to see, and has been known to wander off without warning. It’s not hard to entertain her, but boredom often makes her drift off to sleep. She learns at her own pace and rarely likes breaking away from her own plans. If someone wants her to do something, they’d better give her plenty of notice.
Nanshe has no friends other than her attendants, who she thankfully keeps closer than arm’s length. She idealizes her fathers and has a cordial relationship with them, but having viewed them as powerful, larger-than-life figures for so long has given her somewhat unrealistic expectations of them. Nanshe’s parents rarely do any wrong in her mind, and she feels like she can never own up to their standards. This is a complete fabrication in reality, since they’ve only ever been supportive of her and her limitations. She views her siblings with indifference and as somewhat of a nuisance. She feels as disconnected with them as with everyone else, perhaps because she hasn’t gotten to know them all that well.
Her passion in life is exploring and traveling, which is thankfully much more of an option for her as she matures. Her fathers finally trust her in visiting Neptune’s various moons, and so far she has set foot on every single habitable one. Nanshe prefers austere, far-off places with vast scenery, which is obviously easy to do when most of the moons’ surfaces are uninhabited. She rarely interacts with local populations, even when they recognise her and crowd around (which she hates, by the way). This has given somewhat of a restless soul, dissatisfied with staying in one place for too long. She usually holes herself up in her room while at the palace, but she’s all over the place when she gets to leave. Maybe if she asks nicely enough, her daddies will build her other palaces on other moons? It’s worth a shot…
Any Unique Abilities/Skills: She can tell the cardinal direction with little effort regardless of which planet she’s on, and knows a lot about common (and perhaps rarer) wildlife on Neptune’s various moons.
History:
Nanshe had it all. She was the firstborn of two loving fathers, King Abzu and King Consort Enki, and was given the finest of everything Triton’s capital had to offer. The vast palace and all the servants therein doted on her, teaching and caring for her while the kings committed to diplomacy and charity to bolster popularity among their people. She was very active as soon as she could walk, even though it took a little longer for her to speak. Many attendants joked that she was so pampered that she didn’t need to say anything. Her fathers were almost never present for her when she was scared, upset, or needy, leaving her to rely on her caretakers instead.
As she grew, the kings and their servants did their best to get Nanshe to socialize. The problem was, she didn’t want to- at all. Every time they introduced her to one of the children of nobility, she was soon brought to tears for one petty reason or another. Even as she was brought to more social events, she still met everyone with silence and a hasty retreat behind her attendants’ robes. She was somewhat thankful when her fathers started welcoming her siblings into the world, because it meant most others would focus on the baby more so than her. Her first brother Epadun was born three years after her, her next brother Hegal two years after that, and her youngest sister Tiamat three years after that.
Her favorite memories were established during royal missions to other moons and planets. While the throngs of people around her were overwhelming, the scenery was fantastic and filled her with awe no matter where she went. No matter if it was the gleaming towers of Mercury or the harsh tundras of Pluto, she loved seeing it all. She often imagined what it would be like to live on those worlds, even if it meant she was born a different person. Was she dissatisfied with her life? Not at all, but it was still interesting for her little mind to wonder.
She was never sent to the fancier schools like her siblings were because of how often silence struck her. Nanshe’s parents and tutors were kind and patient with her shortcomings, but with every failed attempt at gaining confidence she felt more like withdrawing herself. And that she did as the years went by, but not enough for her to vanish from the public view. There was still plenty of people-watching and other entertaining things at public events, but the thought of socialization just made her heart sink. While her fathers were still largely absent from dealing with royal events, they assumed they knew best and limited the number of those interested in befriending her. She never once had a suitor approach her, whether by her own standoffishness or her fathers’ protectiveness. Can you say ‘sheltered’?
On turning fifteen, one of many gifts she received was a compass given to her by King Consort Enki. Having had it since he was a child, its nacreous sheen had faded through the years- however, its sentimental value was through the roof. This was hardly her first gift from them, but Nanshe had never seen such a personal gesture from her father. She was so overcome with emotion that she poured out her feelings to him and King Abzu. They heard all sorts of heretofore unknown things about her, and were stricken by guilt at all they apparently missed throughout her upbringing. Figuring it was time for a paradigm shift amongst the family, they plotted their next vacation to the shallow seas of Psamathe. For once it was a vacation not for their public image, but for fun. They were making up for lost time.
It was there that Nanshe awakened as Sailor Neptune, as the royal family was under threat by seafaring insurgents. While the royal guards fended off the threat fairly well, Nanshe made quick use of her newfound powers to stop them in their opponents in their tracks. With the family bidding a swift and unexpected farewell to Psamathe, the royals and their advisors had much to discuss. The first order of business was the princess’ new status as Sailor Neptune, followed quickly by the notion of unrest in their domain. Perhaps, they thought, it was time for Nanshe to reach out as a symbol of unity and protection for Neptunians.
They would consider her feelings above their political aims, but Nanshe saw it was a fine opportunity to pursue her passion- exploration. Knowing this (and perhaps conceding to their own guilt for keeping her cooped up so much), her fathers assigned her a personal spacecraft and a band of female royal guards to escort her on peace missions throughout Neptunian society. She fancies herself something of a wanderer at heart, flitting between her home and Neptune’s various moons as she pleases. Little do her fathers know her time is mostly spent sightseeing rather than building trust with locals. Perhaps they’ll find out in time…
Senshi Information
Senshi Name: Sailor Neptune
Senshi Fuku:
A black bodice is covered at the chest by a swath of teal fabric, while a voluminous mint green wraparound skirt falls from her waist to down below her knees, parting slightly at the front. Her sailor collar is a solid mint green, fastening to a star-shaped teal amazonite gemstone on her chest. A large teal bow with long tails sits on her lower back, and a circlet of teal glass beads holds a star-shaped amazonite on her forehead. Soft mauve cloth bands slightly darker than her hair cover her wrists and ankles. From these, triangular black sheathes taper; from her wrists these sheathes cover the backs of her hands, while at her ankles these rise up her shins. Her hands and feet are bare, showing her teal-painted nails on both. Teal shoulder pads are overlapped by her sailor collar and made of large-scaled fish skin, and seemingly unattached to anything else. Her neck is almost completely covered by a mauve cloth band necklace with extensive mint green and teal embroidery of sea life interspersed by tiny seashells. Glimmering teal and mint green gems adhere to her cheekbones and temples, and an opaque teal gloss adorns her lips. Mauve eyeshadow and black eyeliner enhance her tiny eyes. Ivory wraparound earrings squiggle up her entire ear, with a half-dozen mint green fish scales the size of her thumbnail dangling down from her outer ear.
Henshin:
Neptune Power, Make-Up! With these words, she holds up her compass and its arrow spins quickly. Her unclothed form glows mint green and plunges downward, as though she were dropped upside-down into the vast deep- eyes closed, face serene, and short hair flowing. Her figure is somewhat blurred like she were viewed through an underwater lens- to enhance this impression, bubbles occasionally rise up from around her. She spins gently, her bodice forming and brief bursts of being, hairy water summoning her star-shaped gems. Outward motion of her arms slows her descent and further water my bursts issue from her head, neck, wrists, and ankles in quick succession, forming the accessories therein. Further motion of her limbs redirects her upward where, as she rotates- powerful ripples allow her skirt, collar, and bow to take shape. Her spinning stops and she settles on the ground, feet planted firmly and her fingers grasped at the front. The henshin ends, and a determined look emanates from her eyes.
Powers:
Crystalline Tomb! Salt crystals begin blooming rapidly on her opponent. Approximately one-fourth of a target’s surface is covered by the layer of salt immediately in random areas, but it quickly advances to cover even more. This can severely limit range of motion with limbs, and if two affected body parts were to meet (such as elbows and knees), they would be stuck in no time. The end result is approximately four-fifths of the opponent being encased in a salt crystal, usually immobilizing them. While the effects are easily mistaken for ice, fire has little immediate effect- gallons of water can dissolve the crystals instead. As well, exceptionally strong individuals could shatter the crystals, though they can rapidly reform. This can affect any number of targets within thirty feet, but in that case the effects are reduced exponentially.
Saline Scourge! A dense cloud of granulated salt encircles her, significantly slowing (but not always stopping) most attacks headed her way. From there, she can control the cloud and inundate targets within thirty feet of her with a loose mass of salt. Damage dealt this way is abrasive, but not generally powerful- this attack is meant more to overwhelm her foe. The cloud loses its defensive properties as it leaves her person, unless she directs it back around herself. If she were dealt and attack or lost her concentration, the cloud would dissipate. Water slows the effect of the salt cloud, though the effects can endure even if she were submerged.
Weapons or Magical Items:
The compact-like compass given her by her father serves as her henshin item. Large enough that her tiny hand can barely wrap around it, its inlay and outer case shine with nacre.
She wields a rope dart, which is made up of a translucent salt block obelisk with keenly sharpened edges. This block attaches to a fifteen-foot-long rope via an ivory ring on the tail end, where a decorative cluster of cured mint green fish scales and a triangular, foot-long teal cloth pennant embroidered with Neptune’s emblem in mint green are affixed as well. The intent of the weapon is to throw or swing the salt block at the opponent, and the rope is affixed to easily pull it back to her possession. This weapon does not deal powerful blows, but relies on superior range and quick strikes to do its work.

The small craft was entering Despina’s atmosphere, and the blur of the advanced altitude was fading fast as they approached. Though small, Despina was a fascinating moon for young Nanshe, its irregular surface forming great mountains and deep watery trenches. Its domed underwater towns, though few, were built on steep cliffsides under the depths.
Nanshe looked out the windows with fascination, but the time devoted to their spiraling descent bogged her down. Why? They wanted her to rehearse her lines and practice public speaking. Ugh. Could they just land already?
“Your highness, please focus.”
One of her royal attendants, with only her face showing through her hooded helmet, sat across from the princess. “What would be your words to political dissidents? Those who disagree with our state of affairs?” It was a very real possibility, given the encounter on Psamathe. Perhaps the kings’ outreach missions weren’t as helpful as they anticipated. Lunar rule wasn’t for everyone, after all.
Nanshe was blank. It was a terrifying thought, and one she didn’t want to deal with. Could she pass on this one? Probably not. She began with her normal prolonged silence, her eyes drifting to the window. “We only have our peoples’ best interests at heart. We want Neptune to prosper.”
The guard nodded slowly, though the look on her face was somewhat disapproving. Nanshe could tell the answer was bland, but what else could she say? She believed Neptune was the best civilization in the Sol system, but how else could she prove it? As usual, her attendants may need to improvise and elaborate on the princess’ terse opinions.
Nanshe sighed, gathering her thoughts. “We will always be one Neptune, no matter who rules us. The kings cherish our culture and history, and nobody will ever take that from our grasp.”
Damn it. That was just a basic rehashing of what she’d already said, wasn’t it? How humiliating. With a brief drop of her shoulders, Nanshe rose and escaped to the back room of the vessel.
“Princess, please stay seated!” The attendant reached out futilely, soon tightening her empty grip. Swiveling in her seat, she faced the pilot and the other attendants towards the helm. “Why does she always do this?”
