Slamming the door closed with her foot, a tall brunette hurriedly placed her hair in a high ponytail as she walked quickly down the hall from her suite in the public quarters of the Palace. The woman wore a stylized uniform of the Crystal Guards with a black long-sleeved shirt of form-fitting material specialized for generalized protection against conventional weapons and magic. Green piping traced an elegant design on the dark, gray armor plating surrounding her upper body, but not her arms. Wrapped around her waist was a ribbon belt of the same colors as the piping, except at the middle was a pink, rose-colored ball filled with rose potpourri. The pants were of the same material as the shirt and covered the top of her heeled boots with green laces and piping that covered the side and top of the boots. It was far from the conventional fare, but it suited Kino Makoto quite well.
A year ago, she would have worn the uniform of Sailor Jupiter, for when one was in the Crystal Palace one was always on duty, but that had been retired and replaced with the feminine and green version of the Palace Guard's uniform. Reaching up to straighten the green ribbon in her hair, she sighed. In light of past events, Makoto had taken it upon herself to strengthen the palace security by restructuring the Palace Guards. No longer would the guards only serve a ceremonial purpose; now, the guards would be a defensive weapon. Her suite had been recently relocated closer to the guards' quarters in the public wing of the palace.
Stopping just before reaching the doorway, Makoto surveyed her appearance and straightened her uniform to make sure it was crisp and flattering. Satisfied, she strolled into the practice room, where the recruits had already begun training, and Makoto critically gazed at each of the recruits in the front row as she passed. Then, she cut down the middle of one of the rows and observed practice from the center of the group. A couple of the recruits, unaware of who the woman was, stopped or slowed down to give Makoto odd or appraising looks as she walked past.
"Furuhata Makoto?" The instructor at the front of the room inquired, which inspired the rest of the recruits to stop and watch the spectacle. Turning her head, she blushed a pale pink and waved at everyone to continue. "Sorry, don't mind me!" The training sure looked boring, maybe she could spice it up a bit.
Makoto: You've got to stop reading so many romance novels! Minako: Look who's talking! You think the paperboy likes you just because he rides by your front door every morning!

The instructor walked through the middle of the recruits in a saunter that reminded Makoto of the many times she got in trouble with a teacher in school for fighting. Quirking her mouth, Makoto motioned for the instructor to walk closer before speaking. "This sure looks boring. I'd like to see what the latest batch of recruits can do," she said, motioning around the room with her hand. The instructor sighed and looked annoyed that his training schedule was going to be changed, but he caved in and ordered the recruits' attention.
As the instructor walked back up the front of the room, Makoto had the recruits' full attention. "My name is Furuhata Makoto and what I do within the Crystal Guards doesn't concern you, yet." She walked up closer to the line of recruits and paced down to the other end of the line. There was still another batch of training for the recruits to finish, which would determine their position within the Crystal Guards or if they were unsuited for the profession of Crystal Guard. "This half of the room, go sit down by your instructor. Your turn will be later."
Then, to the other half of the group she said,"Pair up in groups of three and if the numbers work out wrong, than I or your instructor will join your group. Spread out throughout the whole gymnasium, because you do not want to get involved with a neighboring group." Grinning as she walked up to the front of the gymnasium where the instructor was sitting, Makoto patiently waited for the recruits to settle themselves in groups of three. "This will impact your status as a future Crystal Guard and your ranking. Do not use weapons and lethal or permanently disabling attacks. For now, the object is defense and once your opponent has landed a hit on your body, you will come to the front and sit with your instructor. The last person standing in the group will sit down on the opposite wall away from the other groups."
"Does anyone need an extra member in his or her group? Ready, fight!"
Some of the recruits stared at each other and looked confused for a couple of moments, while the quick-witted took advantage of the confusion to begin their "assault" on the members in his or her group.

Will straightened his uniform as he sauntered into the training grounds his team would be getting getting ready in a few hours for a raid on a rebel location. Part of his duties though is to inspect the new recruits. Four of the recruits had expressed interest in joining the counter terrorist elites. His was the toughest of regiments in the world. To be an elite you had to be the toughest being that the human race had to offer. Everything else would be taught to you in time. These grunts though were still fresh and he had to see whether or not they'd be up to the task. He stepped into the gym just as the students began to spar. Sure enough someone noticed as he entered. One of the would be elites stood to attention, saluted, and shouted, "Officer on ...." He never got the chance to finish as his opponent caught him with a punch right across to the jaw sending him to the floor. From what he remembered into the file the kid was the son of some wealthy investor from Canada. No doubt he thought a career in the royal guard would help his sons career and a stint in the counter terrorist corps. He had to earn it first though. Will immediately jumped the boy as he shamefully stood and headed to the front of the room.
"That's exactly what happens you brown nosing little shite! You wanna be an elite?! If you use such elementary move you'll get your heart cut out by the rebs! You're a giant disgrace to the entire guards! Sit down before someone hurts you boy!"
The final point was emphasized with a shove the the back of the kids head. It may seem brutal but shame was a powerful tool. It would definitely weed out who belonged here. Will strolled next to the two instructors and nodded to them as he took his place next to them.

Oh yes, this was much more exciting and allowed for Makoto to see who would really cut it as a Palace Guard. As her eyes scanned the quickly dwindling groups, she took notice of improper form and made a note to address those problems with further lessons. Another thought entered her head as she watched William Campbell walk into the training auditorium; each of the middle to higher levels of recruitment training should a similar elimination experience. It quickly pointed to which recruits just couldn't think on his or her feet.
Makoto stifled a giggling snort as William brutally dashed a recruit's dreams of an easy entrance into a high-ranking position within the Crystal Palace. The instructor noticed and gave the brunette an odd look as she stifled her laughs with a hand to her mouth. As William strode up to stand next to her and the instructor, she sent him an approving smile. "It's always easy to notice who thinks it'll be an easy path to the higher ranks. If you have any ideas to spice things up a bit, I'm always listening." She grinned.

Will smirked as he watched the remaining recruits thin out to the final three left standing. The three looked to each other and were about to pair off when Will spoke up, "Hold." Will looked back towards the Teacher and Furuhata. "Well what do you guys think? We have three remaining students and three teachers. Perhaps its time for these three to receive a little more advanced training? What do you think sensei? I believe it's time for the teachers to take a more hands on approach."
Will turned back towards the three and gauged them up and down. There was a female candidate among the three. She was the first female in a very long time to join the guards. To add to it she was the first female to also apply for the counter terrorist corps. Hopefully she'd be able to stay the course. Though he had his sights set on the 6'7" Pol. he had top ranks so far and he was pretty crtain he needed a lesson in humility.

As the fights dwindled down to the reveal the last three surviving recruits, Makoto took notice of the smirk on William's face. Oh, good, he had an idea. A little excited to hear William's plan, her mouth quirked into a matching smirk as she stepped forward to the centre of the room a few feet away from William. As he talked to the three recruits, Makoto critically eyed the recruits while idly waving for the instructor to come toward the centre.
The instructor had a gleam in his eyes as he joined the other two and he eagerly asked in a whisper, "Which one do I get to teach a lesson? I won't say who, but one of them has been disrespectful to the female candidates." Makoto's eyes narrowed at the instructor's words as her temper was easily ignited by a recruit's actions. Her whole life she had heard the brunt of such comments, especially during middle school and right after she became more involved with the Palace Guards. During middle school, she was targeted because of her tomboyish nature, but she was targeted after the Palace Guards was formed because a select few had thought she was only suited for the more womanly role of senshi. Makoto had been heavily reprimanded for teaching them a lesson which drastically proved her strength otherwise.

Will listened to the sensei's insinuation that one of the recruits was being less then cordial to the female recruit. It was certainly no secret on how Makoto Kino felt about the subjugation of her gender. So with a not so subtle point of his thumb he motioned toward the third final standing recruit, a very average looking German with quite the chip on his shoulder. No doubt that this would be a lesson that the German wouldn't soon forget. At least he might learn to show a little more respect to the female recruits. Will quickly stepped in front of the Pol and gave the once over. The two stood toe to toe until finally Will let out a sigh and said, "You gonna bore me to death or are you gonna hit me?"
Apparently that's all it takes to get someone to kick a size 15 boot at you. You know what they say though. The bigger they are, the harder they fall. Will was quick though he wrapped his left arm around the recruit's leg and through an elbow at his throat. The move sent both of the men sprawling on the floor. The larger of the two started to chuckle and said, "You really think you can beat a man twice your size in a wrestling contest?" The Pol immediately latched onto Will's leg and flipped him onto the floor as he wretched the leg. Will smirked at the move a simply replied, "Wrong leg." Will slapped the side of his knee causing the prosthetic leg to fall off. Will moved to the back of the recruit while he was confused and wrapped his arms around his neck and squeezed with all his might. The Pol struggled but surrendered to his fate and slapped his hand twice on Will's arm. Will released the hold and awkwardly balanced himself on one foot and said, "Here ended the lesson."

Makoto's eyes locked on the chauvinist and she took a step forward as she motioned to the other side of the room. The student, smug, crossed his arms over his chest and stepped to the side. The teacher placed a hand on the brunette's shoulder and leaned forward to whisper into her ear. "This isn't the place or time. I shouldn't have mentioned it." Turning to look at him with disbelief, her eyes narrowed as she said, "I can't let it slide!" Sighing in exasperation, Makoto's fist clenched in exasperation. She hated to admit it, but he was right. Her fist slowly relaxed and turned on her heel to stand across from the female recruit.
The two watched the fight between William and the Pol. The fight earned the occasional smirk or nod of appreciation from Makoto. "Get ready," she said to the female recruit. "This won't take long," she said, nodding to the ongoing fight. As expected, it ended rather quickly. The teacher and the remaining recruit turned to look at Makoto and the female recruit. Grinning, Makoto motioned her opponent to an empty area in full view of the other recruits and staff. "You can learn from anything and everything," she whispered as she bowed to the female recruit, who bowed in return without saying a word.
Slipping into a defensive position, the brunette began to circle around the female recruit when the recruit took a tentative step in Makoto's direction. The two began to circle each other, but Makoto refused to be the first to move. Realizing with her older opponent was doing, the female recruit frowned, then glared at Makoto as if the older woman had slighted her. Dashing forward, the female recruit snapped her leg up high toward the woman's exposed face. Before there was contact, she retracted her leg and dropped lower to hit her opponent in the midsection.
There was never any contact for the recruit was almost pitched off-balance when Makoto stepped to the side to avoid the attack. Hands behind her back, Makoto leaned forward slightly with a grin, "You'll have to try harder than that." The female recruit clenched her fists and scowled at the taunting woman before dashing forward. Feinting to the left, she hoped to catch the brunette off-guard with a roundhouse kick, but there was still no contact. Makoto never made an offensive move and only continued to evade the female recruit's attacks.
"Furuhata Makoto!" The instructor scolded, sighing in exasperation. Eyes narrowing, the recruit decided enough was enough.
